The Ralston Purina Company was founded under a different name in 1894 in St. Louis. Founder William H. Danforth created the company’s distinctive checkerboard logo for the company, which originally sold animal feed for all different types of livestock.
The company changed its name to Ralston Purina in 1902, and the World Fair held in St. Louis in 1904 helped to popularize the brand. The pressure-cooked Purina Dog Chow was introduced in 1954, and was distributed widely to grocery stores across the U.S. By 1966, the company had hit $1 billion in sales each year.
In 2001, Purina merged with Swiss food company Nestlé to form NestléPurina. Today, the company manufactures Purina, as well as other dog food brands such as MightyDog. NestléPurina also produces Friskies and Fancy Feast cat food to help feed a variety of pets.
