Hill’s was developed by a veterinarian as a prescription for a seeing-eye dog that had developed kidney failure. Hill's Pet Nutrition was originally manufactured in Kansas in four prescription varieties. The brand eventually became known as Hill’s Science Diet. Today, the prescription dog food is sold in 86 countries around the world. The Colgate-Palmolive Company purchased Hill’s Pet Nutrition in 1976. The line is now split into two product lines, Prescription Diet and Science Diet.
